Aporia, a new video by Essex Olivares, speculates on hypothetical models for a digital republic. The narrative unfolds a hive state, where citizenship is not defined by geo-political boundaries, but in a subscription-based commitment addressing two mutually dependent selves: meat and digital. A spoken text, adapting the format of a software user agreement, envisions the social contract between this networked and its constituents. This video is the first of a larger project exploring dramas of litigation and social imperatives with a sci-fi bent.
Essex Olivares are an artist duo of Eve Essex (lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) and Juan Antonio Olivares (lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany). Selected exhibitions include 'Columbidae', Cell Project Space, London, ‘The Chicago Effect: Redefining the Middle’, Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, 'The String and the Mirror', Lisa Cooley Gallery, NYC, and ‘In Practice: Chance Motives’, at SculptureCenter, Long Island City, where they launched a newly commissioned iPhone app, ‘Incorporate’.
